Parla Does What?

Weine does Anya Hindmarch and Parla does iPhone covers - how to diminish your art, reduce it to the latest common fad and forget it's anything special for a dollar or two - what absolute categorical shit, I'm using mine to catch the vomit every time I look at it.

  2. Fear not, for his imperial excellency Prince Vandalog, the high commissioner and feudal baron of the fiefdom of street art has just officially conferred the esteemed title of 'AWESOME' upon Parla.

He has also publicly lamented the regrettable oversight of the company in question for neglecting to allow him the opportunity to experience the luxurious texture of this product at first hand, and furthermore has decreed his desire to be gifted one of these items for Xmas. Therefore in accordance with the long established urban art blogging tradition of free merchandise being forthcoming in return for favourable publicity it is prophesised by the runes that said items will be dispatched by first class mail no later than 3pm today.

    Dear Dr Funky,

We at Sprocket And Dongle injection mouldings take enormous pride in our lovingly mass manufactured artisanal lifestyle enhancers.

An array of underground countercultural icons and freedom fighters now choose to extend their market penetration through S.A.D's unique selling propositions.

We are offering you the chance to offer your readers a chance to carry the 'Street Art is Dead' message of "flagrant anti commercialism", "rejection of bad art" and "intolerance of life's bullshit" wherever they go on their most personal and intimate of communication devices, the iconic iPhone- now an indespensible "Swiss army knife" vital for urban living.

Every time they call, text, email or or use one of the countless 'apps' they, and anyone around will instantly be aware of the minimalistic red capitals on the plain black background that screams "I reject your phony consumerist culture, opportunism, crap 'art' and empty posturing".

Thus forging your brand identity ever more vividly in a relentless assault on the establishment enabled through Polymer Technology (C).

What better opportunity to harvest the lower hanging fruit and reinforce your burgeoning brand identity as the "real anti-capitalists on the block" just in time for Christmas?

We can promise delivery direct from our factory in Liaoning Province China to your readers at extremely agreeable prices as long as the influx of subsistence child labour from the countryside continues,

    Wishing you the Seasons Greetings

  5. Dear Dr Funky,

Due to the large amount of suicides and deaths from overwork at our production facility, we regret that the bulk order of phone cases you placed further to our last conversation may be slightly delayed. I do hope this minor issue will not affect your enjoyment of our products. Rest assured that we are flouting all known environmental regulations in order that you are able to receive the items promptly and consequently maintain your influential brand status in the urban art community.

    Best corporate wishes,

    Bob Dongle.

  6. I don't think some of you understand quite what's at stake here. For Vandalog, this phone case isn't just another pointless vanity lifestyle accessory...

Instead it represents the opportunity to leave it lying around casually, (yet conspicuously close to him) in the common room of his expensive private university, where hopefully a slightly nerdy and probably overweight teenage female student will notice it and become instantly moist with desire, thus cementing his reputation as the cool graffiti guy on campus.

To put it simply, this phone case could transform Vandalog into the James Dean of his generation, and if environmental devastation and human rights abuses are the price we have to pay for that, then so be it.

  7. guess what?

I was asked to make some "edgy, urban" designs for iPhones, iPads, Playstations, etc recently. I said no thank you as I own none of these products, the pay was bad (percentage per sale, no cash up front), and I'm just not interested in there being more shit for shit heads to buy.

I did visit the companies website though. Banksy makes all that crap for them.

I have a list somewhere of all the stupid products/companies/lifestyle accessories I've turned down recently. Maybe I'll email it to you Funky so you can see the temptation that is put in front of us all the time. The temptation to be able to feed our families for a month from just a days work, as that's what these kinds of products represent. In the case of Parla, no days work, as his are just details from paintings he already made. Easy money! Nowt wrong with that. The only thing Parla has done is ruin his reputation with a bunch of people who can't afford his paintings. I doubt he gives a shit...

  8. Dave, I think it would probably be easier if from now on we all just automatically assume that you've been offered every kind of design job/sponsorship/product placement/cash to sell your bum that could possibly exist in the world...then it will save you the trouble of having to tell us each time.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I like hearing the stories about the fierce competition between top global producers of "all the stupid products/companies/lifestyle accessories" who are beating a path to Dave's door it makes me wonder what he's doing to attract that type of attention from those types of people.....Also...What is the name of Banksy's manufacturing company Dave? I want to get some ethically produced tat made.

Hang on Dave, didn't you say about a week ago how you'd teamed up with a promoter to have your name laser etched on iPads that are going to retail at 150 euros extra per item?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Just found the post, my mistake, it was 700 Euros more, not 150.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Seriously? How about this: If Incase sends me some free merch. I'll give it away. And if it's a laptop case, I'll send it straight to Dr. Funky to vomit in IF he reveals his identity.

What I find so hilarious is how impossible it would be to please you guys. If I had said "Damn these products are awesome" without seeing them, you'd be giving me shit right? If I had said "These products are stupid" you'd be saying "But Vandalog used to love Parla. What's his deal? He just follow fads and now Jose is out of fashion or something?"

As for the idea that I use street art to get girls, I'd like to remind everyone that street art is for old people.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The product can be stupid without the artist being stupid RJ no? (presuming you are actually RJ) You really shouldn't second guess the opinions of everyone who posts here....And i think the thing about you using it to get girls was meant as an analogy about how such an accessory is akin to 'wearing ones' heart or someone elses heart) on your sleeve'

Street art is for old people??? Explain!!! My 5 year old loves Burning Candy (but my 7 year old has grown out of them already)

And why should Funky disclose his identity, I seem to remember you harping on about how aweful t would be if Banksy's identity were "officially" revealed (even though everyone knows and he doesnt even hide it anymore).....so why should Funky reveal himself????

    ReplyDelete
  14. revealing myself to a minor? surely I should be outraged at the suggestion?

    ReplyDelete
  15. quite right sir, but one custom-laser-etched iPad is hardly a consumer empire now is it?

and they paid me 200 euros to make the design, and they think they can auction it for 700 more than it would sell for normally (and as it's an auction, maybe more)
so I potentially could make a grand from less than a days work
    I win. Again!
    ;-)

As it happens, not an hour ago I received an email from a company offering me another licensing opportunity. I do nothing to attract their interest other than existing. What should concern you is that, if a virtual unknown like me is getting these opportunities, then you know that all those artist you hate, and that have less scruples than me, are also getting them, so the world is gonna be filled with a million times more crap in the not so distant future!

I post on this site as an "artist" involved in this "scene", rather than a consumer, graffiti writer with a chip on their shoulder, or whatever you other anonymous gentlemen are, so as to give you a little balance in your world of hate.

You give Parla shit for licensing a section of an old painting to a manufacturer who pays him. Yet you don't support him by buying his work, so why do you have the right to tell him he's not allowed to make some pin money from idiots who spunk extra cash on things because they have a print on them? Damn, if someone offered you the chance to make some cash without doing any work, wouldn't you say yes!?!?

There's a difference between constructive criticism of a persons artwork, and hating on everyone for making a buck. You'd probably kick Lautrec's walking stick from out under him because he "sold out" and made posters for nightclubs for money.

No one will take this blog seriously if all y'all just post hateful comments under the guise of "anonymous", and thus no one, be it fan-boy or artist, will give a shit about your opinions, even the interesting and valid ones, and the whole dirty world will keep on turning while you cry over your keyboard about it.

I thought this blog was something worthwhile, but you just attack people like me that are on your side, so all it becomes is a place for everyone to get out their hatred. Go do some sport. Get laid. Make art!!! Do something useful with your negative energy, maybe you'll feel a little better about yourself and the world! You're all so bored with your lives that your only joy is to come on here and call people cunts. Go DO something! Go make some real street art if it's so important to you!!!

But you won't, you'll just come back with another scathing personal attack. Oooooo. Gee. The worlds a better place now, thanks.

Anyway. I was waiting for paint to dry. It is now. Back to work.

  16. I'm shocked and appalled. Maybe we should start a "We Love Funky" thread for a sympathetic circle jerk? Maybe if we roll around on the floor wailing in a pool of our own fluids we could all get free life enhancing trinkets from a corporate sponsor wishing to cash in off the ensuing site traffic and PR possibilities?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I was the one who said about Vandalog using his phone case to attract women. Yeah, it was a joke (don't sue me Vandalog!)...but at the same time I can't help wondering at the motivations of people buying shit like this, just as I wonder about the way people use status symbols in general to boost their image/sex appeal/perceived wealth or whatever else they feel they're lacking in.

Cue somebody saying 'oh but I just like the image'... sorry but I'm not buying that. Parla is a brand name just like Rolex and it's all about cachet and defining yourself through the patterns of your consumption. These are made to appeal to the highly image conscious iSheep who have to possess all the latest gadgets and who are desperate to let everybody else know it by flaunting them at every opportunity.

It's crass boring consumerism. Graff up your phone yourself with a fat marker pen and then (depending on how good your handstyle is) I might be impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Exactly.....
There lies the crux of the issue at hand....
If you aint a writer why would you reflect yourself in writers glory by having handstyles on your phone????
Is the bloke who done the artwork even a writer or is he one of the many urban artists who incorporate our language into their work???
Okay its in the public domain and ripe for reappropriation but does that make it ok?
I would never walk around with that on my phone I like it to look like a phone, unobtrusive and functional for the purpose of making calls etc....I left enough yards stations and insides looking like that and worse back in the day eons before this shit was 'cool'...but I dont need people who see me using my phone to associate me with it to cop some sort of glory...
If people wanna do that then it's up to them but expect a reality check on this blog and dont expect writers and free thinkers to let it go unquestioned.Vicarious living eases boredom.

    ReplyDelete
  19. ' so why do you have the right to tell him he's not allowed to make some pin money from idiots '

I have a duty as Super Funky to let the truth out, not to sit around and brand some crap 'Awesome' in the hope it gains me and my blog some brownie points. What is really needed is some fucking honesty to make some people open their eyes and maybe think a little for themselves rather than being told what to buy and why.

It's not about negative energy it's about rebalancing all the bullshit positive pr that flies around and around and around this scene, to such an extent no one see's it for what it is.

    ReplyDelete
  20. To brand anyone who doesn't toe your line, Dave or who questions you, as being a saddo with no life other than this blog or merely a "Writer with a chip etc" crying into a keyboard "hating on people for making a buck" with this blog being ones only vent displays unbelievable lack of awareness and imagination....ignorance is bliss...dream on.

  21. Fair point about Funky revealing himself. Part of what makes both Banksy and Funky able to say what they say is that we don't know (or choose to ignore) their identities. Generally, even when I disagree with what is on this blog, I'm glad somebody has said it, even anonymously. It just seems like if Funky is truly in nobody's pocket or whatever (maybe by saying "no one's" he really means "I'm in lots of people's pockets, not just one") and doesn't care about upsetting people, he wouldn't be anonymous. But I don't blame Funky for being anonymous, it's interesting and probably allows him to write more freely.

The street art is for old people comment is probably too complicated a discussion for internet comments, but here's the gist of my opinion on that topic: the average street art fan is much older than me. The photographers of flickr are much older than me. The forum people are much older than me. My average reader is much older than me. Young people like street art too, but the hard-core fans tend to be at least 30, if not older. So maybe "street art is for old people" is an exaggeration, but I think it's time to stop assuming that street art is for subversive young men. Certainly lots of different sides to this debate though. There are young street artists and street art fans still discovering the "genre", but they are just outnumbered by older ones for now.

Dave and I disagree on a lot of things, but I like a lot of what he has to say today.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Dave, You really do come across as a sanctimonious bell-end. Perhaps you should become a full time writer for Vandalog, so that you can freely promote yourself and your commercial agenda on a daily basis and where your self-righteous diatribes won't be subjected to the kind of scrutiny that you obviously resent having to deal with here.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You're a seriously conflicted individual Dave. I remember you arguing on here that artists shouldn't sell out, but should get a normal shitty job instead to support themselves if necessary, as you have done yourself.
Another time you're saying that you have supported yourself since the age of 16 through your art., and commercialism is fine.

Maybe you've got a bad memory, or you're just one of those people who have to always be against whatever the prevailing opinion seems to be at the time, but it's impossible to take anything you say seriously because you contradict yourself so often.

This blog is hilarious. Street art sold out 10 years ago and you just noticed in 2010, lol.

It was never going to be revolutionary just as soon as the first 'limited edition' print was sold. Why 'limited edition'? Are we about to run out of paper and ink then?

Proper revolution does not start like this:
Question "Tonight we shall storm the Palace, how shall we proceed"
Answer "I'll get cutting a stencil of Mickey Mouse with a gun"

There's nothing more capitalistic than a limited edition print....

  25. I've read Vandalog on and off pretty much since it started, have met RJ a few times and think he's a nice young man, if somewhat impressionable, naive and trusting. He's been allowed, even encouraged to get into a position in which he finds himself where many of the top artists and establishment bodies are open to him on a personal level.
Seeing how his blog has become more and more focussed around the 'establishment' and 'product' aspect of the art world whereas before it seemed to give just s much time to random art and artists with no immediate commercial interest or agenda or establishment approval, and in this way RJs naivety was a massive boon to the scene as it enabled him to see art untainted by the machinations of the establishment, which is one of the reasons I started reading it, I was able to discover new artists that I'd never read about anywhere else because they're not part of the 'Axis ' network.
Little by little over the last year it has become more 'establishment' oriented and 'product oriented' to the detriment of any other agenda, to the point at which I find the term he has been saddled with on here as 'Brandaflog' seems fitting which is extremely disappointing indeed.
I can't help but think, that the 'establishment vampires' have spotted his impressionability and 'got their teeth into him' and (while taking great care to appear as if they aren't) exploited his naivety and open mind, stuffed it full of prices and product and 'big names' and moulded his blog into an advert for their artists and products, little by little and with great stealth to the point at which he's now ignoring anyhting else that his previously unclouded vision would see and pass on to his readers.
I understand that his readership is still growing so that would indicate that there is a need for this sort of information, but at what price? At the expense of all other content, the name 'Vandal'og seems ever more distant from the subject matter I find, and sadly Brandaflog seems more and more appropriate. I hope you can take back the power RJ.

Ok, I'm going to wind my neck in a little bit. I'm not totally against this blog and I think Dr Funky does an OK job. I'm for a bit more transparency as to how things work. I also understand that people, myself included, need to make a living. So I don't really care if Eine gets a wad of cash for painting a vat or if Kaws rinses 800 for a spongebob print. Who's getting hurt? Not street art 'cos as Funky says that ceased being revolutionary years ago.

  39. Yeah, I remember Brandalflog when it first started too. He used to walk around taking pictures of street art in East London back then and it was street-level and interesting. Now it's about as interesting as flicking through a mail order catalogue or watching a shopping channel. Personally I wouldn't care and would just ignore it if it wasn't for the influence it has in pushing the whole genre in an ever more sickening commercial direction each day. He should just get rid of the 'Vandal' and the 'street art' associations of the title and call it 'Productlog' instead, so that at least he would then be being truthful with his readers. I'm not joking by saying this Vandalog...a lot of people genuinely resent the way you're parasitically using the history and associations of illegal graffiti and street art to promote a seemingly never ending stream of consumer trash that has little or nothing (other than a very superficial resemblance) to do with the origins, concepts, ideals or beliefs of what genuine graffiti and street art is. Just stop doing it...it's dishonest, disrespectful and taints (and will ultimately destroy) the very thing you've built your ill-founded reputation on.

    ReplyDelete
  40. God that Inkfetish mural is bad, really really fucking bad...like fairground art....but UKStreetArt is one of Banksy's covert propaganda arms and completely subservient to his will so what do you expect?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I would imagine the reson the Jarvis Cocker article is on there is some sort of deal with Time Out, the guy who does UKStreetArt is their webdeveloper....the unhealthy closeness between Banksy/Banksy Global Enterprises and Time Out probably originates or at least thrives in this murk.

I think you'll find there's quite a few artists who post here Dave, it just that you're the only one who chooses to publicly identify themselves and use this place as a vehicle for self promotion.

"I thought this blog was something worthwhile, but you just attack people like me that are on your side"

Nobody has really attacked you on this blog until you latest rant today Dave. I merely asked a question above about an apparent contradiction in what you were saying. You're doing yourself no favours by becoming over defensive about it. Saying things like "Go do some sport. Get laid. Make art!!! Do something useful with your negative energy" is just fucking patronising, because most of us do all of those things, so you shouldn't assume you know all about our lives.

Besides, you're not really somebody who has any credibility when it comes to telling people not to be negative. You frequently post about how you hate the whole human race, evetyone is a cunt, blah blah, and are one of the most negative people on here. I find people with your kind of extreme misanthropy to be full of depressing, destructive energy, so I tend to avoid them.

I actually liked your posts at first, but started to lose interest in what you were saying after your imbecilic rant against the working class, which I felt revealed a deep prejudice inside of you that I hadn't expected, and which I was surprised at, because I'd thought you were more intelligent than that.

Since then you've shown that you don't mind dishing out the vitriol on a regular basis, but can't take any hint of critique yourself.

Oh anonymous voice of authority, i beg for your forgiveness for my lack of humour in choosing a name on a blog. You're right tho, i am a moaning old cunt who doesn't like the shit spouted by little kids who think that posting on a blog makes them some kind of veteran street gangsta. The bullshit you and your anonymous toy friends write shows how little you understand or respect the art that you spend your lunch times in your computer library looking up pictures of, whilst you keep one eye on whatever online multiplayer game you've invested the last 3 months in.

As for something interesting, i havent seen anything interesting in years, when i do, i'll comment on it. Until then, how about you go fuck yourself?

It was from the 'Eine in South Africa' thread, after I'd stated that I'm working class in reply to some Eine loving troll who was calling everybody middle class tories. Dave also managed to get me mixed up with somebody who had slagged off his art, (I've never once commented on his art) which might account for his annoyance, but not his bizarre slurs against a whole class of people...

"Which reveals you as a shallow trend-following dickhead, even if you are a pig-shit factory-working child-beating working class hero.

I don't understand why people are so proud to be under-educated with a shitty job. It's just as bad as being a conservative voting cunt or a member of royalty as far as I am concerned. All human traits, and humans are cunts."

  52. Thanks for the constructive criticism. I think some of it is spot on.

Vandalog definitely goes through phases where we only post about gallery shows and product or whatever, and then we got in phases where we post a lot of actual street art, but a lot of it is "established" artists. I think over the last week for example we've had a pretty good mix of posts from mainstream commercial things to completely new artists.

That said, Unurth does a better job at covering new artists than I ever could.

Honestly, I post what I like. My taste may have become more commercial over the past year, but I think the extent of that is being exaggerated. Two of the most enjoyable things I've written about in the last few months have been John Fekner and The Underbelly Project. The post about John was a studio visit, but he's certainly not the most commercial artist out there, and one of the highlights of that visit was seeing his street pieces. The Underbelly Project is not nearly as commercial as people are saying. The organizers put their lives on hold and threw themselves into that project because they enjoyed it. If they make a few dollars in the end, great, but they probably would've made a lot more money if they'd spent that time at a day job.

A lot of my readers want to see more from Banksy and Eine and whatnot, so recently I tried something to get those readers to look a bit more closely at a more underground artist. I posted about Swoon and Bastardilla's separate visits to London in 1 post. Why? I was lumping those two artists together because 10x more people looking at a headline in their RSS reader will click on something that says "Swoon" rather than just "Bastardilla." It was an effort to get more exposure for a lesser-known artist.

Here's the main reason I don't take as many photos anymore: there are other people who are better photographers and more committed photographers than I am. I pretty much only take photos when I see something that other people aren't going to photograph. Otherwise, I figure Nolions or Luna Park or somebody will take or has taken a better picture. No need to fill up my flickr stream with crappy images of spots that 10 better photographers have seen too. I still enjoy walking around looking at street art though.

As for taking Vandal out of the name, I completely agree. I'm working on redesigning the site and part of that redesign will probably be to rename it something more generic. The "vandal" part of the name was never meant to be taken too seriously, but that isn't clear and I don't want to be like Elbow-toe or the guy behind Fecal Face, always explaining an inside joke that's 10 years old and isn't funny.

Obviously though, I don't agree that I'm promoting "a seemingly never ending stream of consumer trash that has little or nothing (other than a very superficial resemblance) to do with the origins, concepts, ideals or beliefs of what genuine graffiti and street art is." or other similar criticism that people are making.

    ReplyDelete
  53. @Vandalog...

I think you missed the point about the photography thing. (aside from the fact that the street art photographers you rely on are highly selective themselves, in that they tend to be very conservative and favour 'brand name' artists, thus increasing the stagnation of the genre) It's not necessarily just about the street art photos themselves (or lack of them), but more that the whole focus has shifted away from what is happening in the street and on to an exercise in online merchandising and advertising. Sure you'll have a few token posts now and again to maintain the illusion of it being about street art, but it's fairly transparent what the real purpose of your blog has become.

As for your other points, I've heard them all before. You've got a default position that you seem to trot out in response to any criticism. So I can't even be bothered to try to change your mind anymore. You're not really listening to feedback at all...it's just the same standard justifications, and then back to business as usual. You're severely mentally stuck on repeat and nobody can get through to you.

I appreciate it's your site though, and you can take it in any direction you want, although I just don't get why somebody would want to move from examining the authentic to almost exclusively celebrating the fake and lose any credibility they had in the process. Up to you of course. I'm more or less past caring anyway.

  59. Vandalog makes me laugh/cringe in equal measure - he has no opinion of his own, namedrops people/artists he knows nothing about, sucks up to anyone who he thinks will benefit him and backtracks very quickly when pulled up on any issue.
Witness him at any show and u can guarantee he'll be hanging with (hanging around) the people he thinks he should be seen with.
IMO he has had an agenda from the start - and that agenda has for me always screamed of 'Empire Building'. That to me is not an issue as it has always been transparent.
What I dislike is the 'I'm part of the hierachy now' attitude he has recently adopted and this has most defniitely come across in his blog and twitter writings.
Im not gonna get all het up about it cos it doesnt mean that much to me. But if, as is said, pride comes before a fall then RJ has that fate to look forward to - and I suspect as/when it does happen he'll find out who his real friends on the scene are and I doubt there'll be many

  64. How is something dead that keeps going on?

Maybe the capital hungry economical monopoly side of things is dying a slow death, but have we all forgotten what this is all about?

It's about traveling along some boring grey street to wherever you're headed and being suprised and perked up along the way by some unique artwork or impression made by a person who has made themselves and whats on their mind known to you.

Like dogs leaving a scent...but in a more human way through art!

Street art and graffiti in all its forms makes your day to day routines different and lets you know somebody is still willing to glue, spray, paste or drill their opinion to the side of that wall that they weren't supposed to, just so YOU see it.

Doesn't it give you that warm fuzzy feeling in your tummy?

The only death I hope to see is of the cliquey money grabbing naughty buisiness side of things, that is corrupting all the people who are involved in it.

Street art can brighten up a persons day, and who can put a price on that? (other than the artist maybe who needs to buy more materials)

So now we've got Nuart the neanderthal inbreed here as his security goon. All good though, because it means lots of other people in the street art world will also see this thread and get to know about what a self-serving arrogant leech he is. Fuck your shitty little provincial art festival, you desperate hanger-on. You're universally regarded as a vile prick, even by the artists who work with you.

Listen mate, I understand you thought you were on the cusp of a revolution with your little "crass" stencils..and you can stamp your DM's and wave your little black flag all you want.. it won't bring it back. This thread was based on Jose Parla aka Ease, someone who's put the years in on the streets as a writer, developed a unique hand style and made a name and life for himself on the back of it, good for him. He's now allowed a small independent company to use one of his paintings for a fucking laptop case..and you're throwing your dummy out the pram and having a little hissy fit about "street art" selling out..first, he was never street art..second, really.. who gives a toss.

  126. Sprocket And Dongle InjectionJune 22, 2011 at 6:16 PM

    Rob Sprocket
