Not really into the subject matter as I live in an area full of chavs and so tend to see their fat guts spilling over the tops of their velour tracksuit bottoms on a daily basis, but I do admire the skill in this work.
Funky, you obviously like "proper" art, so why not give up on this "street art" rubbish that you so obviously hate? You'd be a lot happier.
If painting a portrait of common folks makes this art somehow "street", then street art has existed for centuries. Just look at Hogarth's "Gin Lane"!
Good portrait, well painted, this style has been around for centuries (Dutch Masters or something, dark backgrounds, blah blah) so not making me think "wow". But then, what does these days?
It's not even anything to do with street art anymore though. The genre of 'urban art' exists as basically a fan club for a few galleries, such as Lazerides, POW and a couple of others, so whatever they decide to sell becomes instantly anointed as something that demands the attention of the fanboys. It's completely commercially driven, and seems to exist in a bizarrely inward looking vacuum.
Yeah, just like it, portraits of real people, not scum, not chavs, just real fucking people. Don't care it's not 'street', don't care it's not sprayed on a wall with anal juice to be new and provocative. Just appreciate something done with skill that has some meaning to me at least.
