http://pobel.no/

Pobel has a new site to browse. It's refreshing to see stencils in a new scenery, with a different take on humour and message. Yes stylistically similar to Banksy but apart in content, which is enough.

And the below, street art in the gallery space again enough originality to work.

Dolk needs to take a look and reevaluate.

  1. Fucks sake, after spending all day hiking out onto a glacier, the last thing I want to see is a 'humorous' stencil. It's like going to a deserted paradise island and finding the beach littered with plastic six pack rings and broken old disposable lighters.

And why does everything have to be a piss poor joke anyway? Are these 'artists' all frustrated comedians or something? It's getting very embarrassing now. Street art is like a sad middle aged man desperately trying to chat up teenage girls. Somebody really needs to have a word.

hmmm, are you feeling ok Funky?
ok, so this stuff isn't bad, especially in the field of stencil art, but I'm surprised at your positivity! Usually you only say positive things about oil paintings!

The first photo is a really great photo. The colours and atmosphere, real nice. But I can't see how this piece really works in reality. Who is ever going to see it? It's like it's only been made for the photo, which means it'll only be consumed in a book or on a blog. Which makes it a fail as far as "street art" is concerned. So then, that would make it regular art, and sorry, but it isn't good enough for regular art.
And to really pick holes in it, why is an alien trying to hitch a ride standing next to an old aeroplane? If it was an old rocket then the joke would make sense. And god help us if alien lifeforms communicate by making stencils (the word "Houston")
And please could Street Artists stop putting their names huge on their pieces. It's supposed to be art, not an advert. If you want people to know that something was made by you, then create a style or way of working that is individual, something that is your own.
Sorry. My initial reaction was "yeah, nice", but as soon as I engaged my brain the piece began to fall apart. I don't hate it, I don't even dislike it, it just irritates me.

The second piece. Yeah, enough originality to work, but it doesn't work all that hard. The people don't really look like they're trying to cram the street cred into the frame (gallery) The guy on the left looks like he's carrying a piano, not forcing letters backwards. Paint the guys free-hand and make them more dynamic. If you have to use a stencil taken from a photograph, then find good actors to pose for the photo.

In the realistic black and white stencil scene this guy is one of the best. which sadly just shows that the realistic black and white stencil scene isn't particularly interesting, exciting, or dynamic, doesn't think it's ideas through very thoroughly. Even Banksy isn't doing anything particularly good in this style any more. He should stick to things like the pet shop, which really was clever, well-made, intriguing, and had something to say. I know it's hard to keep pushing things forward, but we could all try a little bit harder.

I'm going back to my armchair now, my cosy, failure-free spot to critique from ;-)
