' First up, do you reckon that street art will/can keep its integrity in the future, or will it just be consumed as another commodity by the art market?
Part of it will keep its integrity, that part being the illegal unwanted, confrontational part. The part that is angry that’s disaffected, that believes society needs to be reminded that there’s more to life than endless consumption and believing everything you’re sold. Not everything has a price for some there is more.
What about the relationship between advertising and street art? Agencies using similar techniques and ideas to street art in order to get their product out to the consumer, which are sometimes hard to identify as an advertisements for instance.
The modern market economy sanitises everything and sells it back to us. Counter culture is mass produced on t shirt slogans, on cups, on posters, in adverts; the relationship has been there for as long as there’s been demographic analysis within advertising.
What are the implications when collaboration with brands?
The implication is simple, you sell your inspiration to the highest bidder, it lessens its creditability and begs the question ‘what does it mean, if you’re willing to be a prostitute for the society you’re supposedly critiquing?’
The relationship between galleries and street art is becoming increasingly close. What do you think are the peculiarities when deciding to work with a gallery?
It’s an outlet for your work from which you want to make money. Is it wrong? It depends on what you stand for and whether you choose it as a career or as a passion outside of your paid life.
Beyond doubt, the context of street is what its all about. What happens with this urban context when a show is put up in a gallery?
The context is simple, it’s no longer street, it is contemporary modern art.
All the big auction houses have established proper urban art sales. Is the sale, and financial profit from street art not a bit of a contradiction?
yes
You can buy mugs, bags, posters, canvases, if you’re well off even a wall with a Banksy on… so how does this commercial and consumer hype affect the essence of street art?
It affects the essence of Banksy’s street art, by reducing its message and meaning.
What about the allegations of street art and/or its artists selling out?
Many were always about making profit, you can’t sell out if you were already sold.
Do you think that the artist, as a creative individual gets lost in the whole process?
If all they’re sole aim is money the creative process wasn’t there to begin with.
Being commercial is obviously not the aim of street art, so how can artists work against this phenomenon?
By getting back on the street, getting a shit job they hate and remembering what made them fucking angry.'
Fuck off funky. You're about as boring as a comatised Robbo these days
ReplyDeleteWould love to see you say that in front of some of Robbo's crew. You wouldn't though would you...because you only act the bigman online where you think there's no consequences.
ReplyDeleteWho is the person being interviewed Funky?
ReplyDeleteyeah, where is the interview from? I'm sure I got asked the same questions from a student six months ago.
ReplyDeleteare you against what the interviewee is saying? or for?
getting a shit job is a good way to get angry again. but if you only make street art when you're angry people will call it political, and people on here will say you're only doing it to draw attention to yourself. so you might as well forget about the streets, and the shit job, and stay in the gallery, selling drawings to rich folk and victims of pr and hype. people will call you a cunt either way, but at least you won't be working a shit job!
Yeah, lets all base our lives around what people might say on this blog, as an easy excuse not to have to address any of the political issues in society. Carry on with the kiddy art Dave, and have a read of this while you're at it... http://www.newstatesman.com/uk-politics/2011/08/pilger-police-british-young
ReplyDelete"By getting back on the street, getting a shit job they hate and remembering what made them fucking angry.'
ReplyDeleteI thought that was a brilliant answer, true and very relevant. how many of the great, great artists where poor and impoverish...
There becomes a meaning to there work not blaaaaaa....for the sake of it.
"By getting back on the street, getting a shit job they hate and remembering what made them fucking angry.'"This answer is also one of my favourites! That shit hated job is one of the most creatively stimulating situations. My head was awash with ideas whilst tearing skin off chicken breasts hour after hour month after month on 10 hour shifts in a chiller in the middle of nowhere.
ReplyDeleteBut Robbo would say nothing in front of me because he's a vegetable isn't he??
ReplyDeleteYou'll end up the same way mate. Pricks like you always do. It's only a matter of time.
ReplyDeleteCome and get me sweetie

ReplyDeletegood luck... full of fucwits...
"I know it all anyway"...yeah, bit rich coming from you guru Dave the enlightened one.
ReplyDeleteI do plenty of things in society, but I don't need to boast about it on here. What's the point in doing that?
So you think you're so underground because you're into punk and skateboarding, but everyone knows that those things are the preserve of white middle class suburban kids desperate to be 'street. You remind me a bit of Shepard Fairey, with your delusions of being radical and down with the kids. You drifted out of touch years ago Dave, and now you've gone over to the other side.
You were the one picking out a small section of what happened and shouting about it though Dave, by saying the looters should be named and shamed. I guess you didn't see the video of an innocent kid being knocked of his bike by riot police and viciously beaten down Rodney King style, or the guy walking along with his arm around his girlfriend and cops rushing up to him and beating him around the legs with batons just for being in the wrong place. Maybe because the mainstream news didn't want to focus on that stuff because it doesn't fit nicely into their political agenda. So you end up being a pawn of the government, demonising the sections of society that they want you to. They've got you doing their work for them Dave, and the sad thing is that you don't even realise it.
that innocent kid and that guy had it coming. good.im glad. fucking have a go heroes.
ReplyDelete'i do plenty of things in society' - well tell us or shut up! the only thing you do is a) moan clog up here with shit and b) collect dole
you think your amazing because you do fuck all but talk muggy shit...you drifted from whereever you came from and have gone so far into shit territory its amazing you dont even realise it.
i dont need to boast about it because whats the point in that? well there is a point - a very very good one...the fact that no one believes or cares a sweet fuck about your opinions and think that your a violent little cunt...so tell or we will just keep laughing at us...prove us wrong big dick
you need to do something about this funky...like start registering people or summit because that anon is a cunt and making people leave this shit.
ReplyDeletethis blog used to be amazing but this anon is so full of bullshit and violence
And another thing mugsy, I was talking to Dave, so why the fuck do you keep answering for him?? It makes you look like a mentally ill interfering do-gooder prick who needs to mind his own business. Now take Daves cock out of your botty hole and fuck off.
ReplyDeleteThat boy needs therapy.
ReplyDeleteShut it you muggy right wing cunt. We're tired of hearing your Tory-style bleating about law and order. Go suck on Ann Widdicombe's saggy stinking pussy and leave us in peace.
ReplyDeleteNah...you're the cunt here mate. Go suck a policemans dick...you know you want to.
ReplyDeleteSo this right wing idiot above is allowed to call me a cunt, but I'm not allowed to respond and I get blocked if I do??? I see you also deleted my reply to Dave which didn't have anything offensive in it. This has got as bad as Silky's place. You're a prick Funky...or should I call you Mike?
ReplyDeleteThere's occasions where you've forgotten to change your ip and had arguments with yourself - do one or at least show some wit and intelligence, I didn't open a fucking blog to be a database administrator
ReplyDeleteThat's bollocks Funky...I always say my true point of view on here, or else I go over the top to wind up the Tory boys, but I never contradict myself or troll this place just to ruin it like some others do. You must be confusing me with that sheep shagger Wilf.
ReplyDeleteIf you're gonna censor comments on here then at least be fair about how you do it. You can't have some people allowed to dish out the abuse but not others.
And I'm a shit administrator I won't read every dull abusive comment, I'll just delete so if by chance you do write something incisive between pointless sociopathic meanderings it'll probably get lost
ReplyDeleteP.s to those who asked the question who's this an interview with? if I've titled the post 'once upon a time dr funky had an opinion' you really don't have to be Columbo to work it out.
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, it's your blog, so fair enough, I'll 'do one'. It seems to have become infested with right wing trolls here lately anyway, so it feels like a waste of time. I'll let you get on with it.
