Maintaining The Balance
--------------------------------------------
Aim:
To balance the output of street pieces and products for sale
To remain authentic while being commercially viable
Maintaining The Balance - Project 1
A stencil image is painted in the streets as many times as possible with one 400 ml can of paint.
The painted pieces are documented and counted.
An equal number of prints are produced at the same size, in the same colour, of the same design.
Each print is sold with a photograph of it's corresponding street piece.
Maintaining The Balance - Project 2
A stencil is painted in the street to advertise the artists latest print release
A print is produced in order to gain financially from the artists latest street piece
Maintaining The Balance - Project 3
Customers are invited to purchase a print which funds an identical street piece.
The artist produces two identical prints. One is sent to the customer, the other is pasted in the street.
The print includes the customers name. The customer becomes both a patron of art for the community and
an accomplice in an act of "vandalism".
The artist and customer both share the "fame" acquired with "getting their name up", and the risk involved
with the act of doing so.

Antique Dictator 4 Sale
no print, no gallery, not a joke (although funny), not for a show, for a real reason, to fucking say something
‘A’ – Steve More & Remi/Rough @ Blackall Studios, London
Show coming up shortly, the works look suited to the walls of the 'empty headed but fat walleted minions of the pat on the back for liking images I have no understanding of brigade' , of which I hear there are just enough.
Zilda
Fuck it, this french artist has been mentioned by everyone else so i might as well mention them to. And, try as I might their work feels fresh, bringing classical paintings to the street in a way that makes them feel like that's where they were meant to be in the first place, a quite simple idea worked beautifully.

"There is an incredibly low profit margin in clothing"
says Shepard Fairey on his website when asked why his clothing is made in China and not America
I have friends that run a skateboard company. They have no choice but to make clothing as they make so little selling hardware. So if it's a small range of t-shirts that keep their company running, then surely a company with a huge range of clothing must be making a lot of money.
Shepard says they sell their t-shirts to stores for $9.50. He doesn't tell us however how much they cost to make. You can buy a t-shirt from a market for a dollar or two, so let's assume Obey Clothing gets it's t-shirts for a dollar a piece. Screenprinting is cheap and easy, so it's unlikely to cost more than another dollar per shirt. Just to be generous, let's add another dollar to the cost. That's $3, meaning the Obey Clothing range covers it's costs, then makes a 200% profit.

Shep may not like the way Thierry made his name in the photo reprographic business, but it seems they both have the same issues when it comes to asking for permission for the photographs they touch up in their inimitable minimalist fashion.

"pseudo-environmentalist"
blogs do less harm to the environment than fanzines???
once a zine is printed, it uses NO ENERGY
a blog uses constant energy as it is viewed ON A COMPUTER
that means burning fossil fuels, splitting atoms, polluting the planet
etc every second of every day, just so we can be reminded how little
you use your brain
humans make many more computers than they do printing presses
the average life-span of a computer is 5 years, a printing press at
least 25 years
I've seen 100 year old presses still being used today
50% of the worlds population owns a computer compaired to less than 1%
who own printing presses
yes, making paper uses energy. it uses lots of water. but much paper
is recycled (I recycle 90% of my paper waste) and trees that are
chopped down for paper are replaced. Coal isn't replaced back in the
ground to be dug up again for burning in power stations. Nuclear waste
isn't cleverly recycled.
a zine is biodegradable. a plastic computer isn't
really, do you EVER think about what you're writing? does RJ have no
editorial control over his blog, so he can prevent you from sticking
your foot in your mouth all the time? If he was really your friend
he'd have more concern about how stupid you make yourself look
I'm going to stick with zines over blogs. not because they are better
for the environment (the only good thing I can do for this planet is
die) but because, due to the effort involved in making a zine people
bother to switch on their brains before starting up the printing
presses
Thanks for helping the street art scene look a little bit more dumb, every day
Dave
p.s. the reason I care about the nonsense you two write on your blog
is because the majority of your readers think you are an informed
voice worth listening too. people listen to you because your blog is
"the best street art blog". you're therefore responsible for putting
idea in hundreds of thousands of minds. ideas like "zines are
dangerous to the planet" are ideas I don't want planted in peoples
brains. you're making people more stupid than they already are!'

No I've not heard of this award, obviously makes me a dullard with no interest in the art form - so nothing fucking new there.
Let's hope this is the last award for Exit as my tonsils are close to fully constricting my throat and choking the life out of me in protest at having my life force bare witness to this shite humour anymore, lord save us from another witty retort that means FUCK ALL.

New Banksy down on Camden Canal? - UPDATE
Down on the canal over where the infamous Robbo 'beef'stir fry started. So is it Banksy? It's positioned for it and has the look of those Simpsons storyboards, but it's really not much more than a simple cartoon on a wall. If it is a Banksy I'd mark it with the same level of indifference as the sperm alarm.
UPDATE: Piece now improved 100% with a chair chalked up.

New Obey
Out on the 21st, '2nd Amendment Solution'
Obey a new year a new goddamn fucking gut wrenchingly tedious print release.
It's 2011 it's an image with a message, it's got the obey hallmark colours and photoshoppy nature to the it, I shouldn't be annoyed, it should just be expected. Artists build their whole career on their 'style'.
Fuck
It's just so fucking simplistic. It is what it is, no depth no narrative just no fucking something goddammmmittt just another in the long long long line of artistic constraint/restraint/second rate. Please for the love of inspiration, push the boundaries, at least fucking challenge my notion of obey or you know just fuck off.
At the moment it's just another sheet of paper to prop up your wobbly table, just another footnote in contemporary art's snide sneer at the pointless nature of this 'poster art'. Maybe just maybe obey is a vacuous money making scheme to feed some brain dead worms the idea theyre culturally aware? I'll stick with my Dutch specialist mags to feel that way.

Kaws Companion - Passing Through - Hong Kong to Connecticut
When I saw the piece and the title I assumed it was the dilemma of a particular troublesome turd that won't head south of the river, and in a way it is, if the turd is the Kaws piece and the intestine is it's travel route.
And this particularly ugly turtle head finally saw light in Connecticut.

Expressobeans Art of the Year
A site that truly puts the us into us and them. A grand game of swapsies for the collector in all of you. It's not dressed up as counter culture, it's not dressed up as being something different, it's simply about liking the picture you got in your bubble gum wrapper, cherishing it for five minutes and then moving on to the next one. Well done. You took the bullshit, made it about the image and money.
It's also about truly truly fucking bad fucking taste...take a second to look at their nominations for 'Art Print of the Year' , Shep's 'Lion and Yoko' 'hello shitty kitty', Brainwash 'I need a brain transplant to understand the ability to have an idea that alludes to anything', Some old Grafter gash, and alot more pointless shit. Okay don't bother looking, in fact, why the fuck did I look?

edition of 100 out at Blkmkt, Beast of Burden eh? I'm guessing the man in this picture is feeling guilty about having extra maritals with the family donkey? Beastiality now thats an edgy area that needs to be explored, in the quest for counter culture bleeding edges.
Banksy.co.uk Update?
not seen this before and in conclusion not really that bothered, could have been done by alot of different 'artists' and all equally would've met with the same indifference
Anyway the bit that's definitely new is the story boards for the simpsons episode, found - http://www.banksy.co.uk/indoors/simp.html you renegade you sir Banksy.

Build up your rep, get known boy, luckily I don't have $10k to spunk on a canvas and if I did I fucking buy someone who's at least got some sort of back catalogue other than bus shelters in the outback.

Seeing as Shep has started acknowledging his source material for his photoshopping art, this outcome was always likely, gone are the days (actually when were they ever here?) of saying fuck you, this is a money making opportunity artisitic statement.
So we can look forward to a long line of accredited AP images that have been shepified to keep our print buying itch in check well into our 90's - I for one say thank fuck i won't live that long.

School's Started and Dr Funky's got his big hard cane out
The death of Banksy
Can Banksy die? I’ve got no doubt that the man who was writing the name Banksy on Bristol’s walls in the 1990′s can and will, at some point, die. That’s not what I’m wondering though. Keith Haring has been dead for more than 20 years, but you can still buy new products with his imagery - any person with a foothold in popular culture will see their images outlive their lifespan, this of course, is not to say there will be any new images after this point. Long winded opening that can be summarised with 'people die their images live on'. Similarly, Basquiat’s estate released prints after his death. But those artists had names and faces. Even after their deaths, products can still be made using their images, but there’s not going to be any new imagery. But Banksy (the brand, not the man) doesn’t have those same constraints. Disney didn’t die with Walt Disney. Is Banksy one man or many people?
While he is anonymous, Banksy is publicly portrayed as being one person. But what does that one person actually do these days when it comes to making art? Irrelevant point unless what you are trying to state is 'Banksy has no input in work that's in his name'.
Banksy doesn’t paint all of his own street art…yes, obviously, unless an anonymous artist could spend weeks in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the world painting massive billboards, or suddenly hone the ability to create animatronic art installations....
A Banksy billboard/artwork in NYC.
Banksy doesn’t paint all of his street art. That’s well-established. Shepard Fairey has said so (thanks to Mischa for the link to that article) and, in the latest issue of Very Nearly Almost, Eine says that he used to paint street pieces for Banksy. Oh Eine still trying hard to get a little fame eh? But still irrelevant unless we're actually discussing what denotes 'your' artwork - which I don't know we are..Of course, there were even those rats that Banksy hired sign painters to paint in NYC back in 2008. Given his high-profile status and the risks associated with painting, it probably makes legal sense for assistants to paint Banksy’s street pieces. If I were in Banksy’s position, I probably wouldn’t risk painting all of my own street pieces either. So again this point was what?
There’s no way to know if Banksy paints his own gallery art…
Collaboration between Damien Hirst and Banksy.
What about his indoor work? Maybe Banksy still paints everything himself, but I’m doubtful of that. While hiring assistants might be more difficult for Banksy than Jeff Koons, it’s clear in Exit Through The Gift Shop that Banksy has a staff. At the very least, I think it’s safe to assume that Banksy isn’t executing the creation of any his sculptures himself (no matter what this video purports to show). And there’s little reason to think Banksy doesn’t have assistants completing part or all of his paintings. Banksy has said that he paints his own pictures, but how would anyone outside of his team know if he was telling the truth or not? Assistants who work on paintings for an artist are a widely accepted practice. As an extreme example, Damien Hirst has said that his best spot paintings were the ones painted entirely by Rachel Howard, his former assistant. Even if Banksy paints all his own pictures today, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to know if that practice changes in the future. Again though, some use of assistants for painting is probably what almost any artist in Banksy’s position would do.Again what are we discussing here? The nature of ownership, or simply the fact you don't know Banksy's work routine?
There isn’t just one man who can come up with funny stencils… I can think of any number of artists that on occasion come up with a stencil of note. Just as I can think of any number of artists who've created a nice painting. What is the point? Banksy has sole ability to do this?
But regardless who who physically executes the artwork, conceptual artists have long contended that the artist is the one who comes up with the idea of the art, not the one who makes the art. Finally, the point is made. By that standard, what makes a Banksy a Banksy is that he came up with the idea, but he isn’t the only one who could do that. Countless artists emulating Banksy, as well as generations of political cartoonists, have shown that coming up with clever 1-liners isn’t a skill possessed only by one man. Admittedly, I think most people find Banksy’s average success rate with his jokes to be higher than that of a lot the people he has inspired, but that is probably as much about being careful with what you put out there as it is about being clever. Maybe it’s true that no one person will ever be as good as Banksy at his brand of humor and commentary, but a dozen people working together probably could be. But I’ve already made an assumption here: Today, there is only one individual who comes up with all the ideas behind Banksy’s artwork. Again, we have no way of knowing how true that assumption is. Banksy’s cloak of anonymity means that the public really has no idea how many people contribute ideas to the Banksy identity. Today and in the future, the ideas behind Banksy’s art could come from one man or a team of 50 with no input from the original individual who called himself Banksy. How could we tell the difference? So to conclude your point so far is, Banksy could be a team, the skill is not special and we have no way of knowing.
Life after death…
I’m inclined to think that Banksy, the man, is a hard working guy who does involve himself in the making of the artwork that he signs. But given all the possibilities for others to be involved in the Banksy brand without the public knowing a thing, it is clear that the Banksy brand can continue to create artwork indefinitely with or without the original man behind the name. Like the many boys who took on the role Batman’s sidekick Robin (oh, haha okay I came up with this metaphor days ago and only now as I write it down do I realize the irony given Banksy’s supposed identity. I’m an idiot), an anonymous artist’s name and image can be taken up by any number of people. If the man behind Banksy ever leaves the Banksy organization, or when he dies, will the public ever know? It’s possible that my grandchildren will be able to see “original” Banksy artwork completed a century from now. Banksy seems to have reached the absurd hyperbole of conceptual art: the original artist may not even need to conceive the artwork for it to bear his name. Banksy has finally achieved what Warhol and others set out to: the artist is truly a brand without a human identity. Incredible jump in logic, a Banksy machine that grinds out pieces forever, interesting proposition if somewhat far fetched, again the central premise to this whole piece is, he's anonymous he can do anything including live forever. There's a rather simple retort to this, there are any number of people who know him . 100 years down the line Eine's grand kids will try to take credit for everything, whilst flogging their latest 4d wording lazer tag to crown king ruler of the outerverse Mong.
This isn’t to say that Banksy’s death is impossible.Surreal statement. It may happen one day.Really you think? It seems only right that Banksy the brand dies with Banksy the man and it may very well end there, but it would definitely be possible for his team to continue the brand without the man. Then, the questions become would we notice, would we care and how would Banksy the brand change itself from the original intent of Banksy the man? At this point you have to ask yourself, perhaps you should think a little about how Banksy's work has changed in as little as 15 years, prior to him even reaching 40, before trying to make grand leaps into the distant future?
What do you think? Does Banksy’s death promise a new frontier for art? Have I completely misunderstood the brand/man that is Banksy? This is a post of questions I’ve been thinking about more than it is a post of answers and opinions, so I’m looking forward to reading other people’s thoughts in the comments.
In conclusion, C- nice try at constructing a piece on the nature of an artist and his work. Sadly a missed opportunity to get an original discussion, which reading between the lines was 'How do we know one person is at the heart of this? And how do we know he will be in the future?' Possibly when boiled down to this statement, there's not actually much to talk about? Considering how all through art history the nature of ownership has been discussed? Possibly you need to go back and think about your central premise and work out what it is your trying to say? Maybe try to write a little less and say a little more.

David Lyle / Paul Richard / David Walker
These three illustrate my fickle taste and the thin line, between boring / shit / above average
Firstly David Lyle, for the first few seconds I saw this I liked it 'Buyers Remorse'
from this lot
Then there was David Walkers 'pretty picture'
from the same lot , however hard I try to respect this piece and for that matter all Walker's work, all i see is naff portraits, with too much added to 'pretty' them up, maybe for some that's enough, but for me at least it lack longevity. If you can write poetry inspired by this schlock you're a twisted FUCK.
Finally we have Paul Richard's piece
with any luck this is wholly tongue in cheek and in no way as RJ 'hopes' a plea not too tag a piece too quickly, all merit for this actual work is lost from it's placement next to a Dolk placed purely to advertise a show, a canvas and then eventually a print, ie. this should have been disrespected a fucking long time ago.
