Bit more information on why it was buffed: http://www.ladowntownnews.com/articles/2010/12/09/news/doc4d0149944bb44769770853.txt
The piece, commissioned by MOCA for a street art exhibit, faces a war monument and a war veteran's association, neither of which complained though some found it in "bad taste."
So funny. The FBI have a warrant out for him and he's still overground? Fucking soap opera. As for Deitch and MOCA, a satinised version of 'art in the streets' coming april 2011. The truly, street art will be dead.
I'm a fan of Blu's work, but I have to say this piece is as obvious as a Banksy, as most of his "political" pieces are. I much prefer the weirder pieces which leave more to the imagination and so seep deeper into my subconcious. These "statement" pieces are so quick to "get" that I find them almost as instantly forgetable. His best political piece was the one with Eric Il Cane of all the politicians, tv stars, and museum directors snorting up a huge mountain of cocaine - on the front of the museum all those people were linked with! Brilliant! And it was also a good painting.
Of course, a political piece needs to be obvious to reach as many people as possible. Though maybe this one should use a $5 bill rather than a $1, as looking at this makes that Aloo Blak single keep popping into my head, and the impact of the lives of American soldiers being undervalued gets replaced by a happy courus of "I need a dollar, a dollar, a dollar is what I neeeed"!!!
The coffins grow bigger as they receed into the background. In fact one is half the size of the one next to it. This drawing is so bad I'm upset by it. So the fact that it has been buffed is a good thing. And by buffing it the authorities have made sure it has a bigger impact as now the image is surfing around the web. If it had stayed, people would soon have grown used to it and it's message would become just another bit of radio static buzzing in the background, ignored.
I'll share with you my story if you share your dollar with me...
Ignored ? fucking doubt it mate.. would have been headline news on Fox and numerous others, may still make it yet, hence the panic and buff. Sarah Palin would have been calling for his head to be delivered on a silver platter and there would have been massive public debates on the power of art to inspire opposition to sending 19 year old working class kids off to have their arms and legs blown off in fighting an imaginary and un-winnable "war" against civilians on behalf of the corporate whores of America.
As for criticizing Blu's drawing skills with "This drawing is so bad..".. lol. , kinda like complaining the horse in Guernica looks a bit "off". Check yer head.
Hopefully Blu's learnt something from this..not to engage with the fucking half witted idiots trying to co-opt street art for their patronising Museum shows of graf and street art.
come on, you're not taking into account all the hundreds of other pieces produced by Picasso around the same time. IT WAS HIS STYLE it wasn't some one-off that was uncomparable to the rest of his output
so you're saying Blu's style is to make drawings that ignore the law of perspective? that's simply not true. Blu can draw way, way better than this as he's proved time and time again.
I'm not criticising Blu's drawing skills, just this piece.
as for my comment about it being "ignored" I was talking about over time. when you see things over and over they lose their effect. I live not far from three Blu paintings, two of which are two or three times higher than this piece. I hardly notice them any more, they've become like the buildings that surround them. they don't change. they are part of the landscape and have zero impact on my daily life. THAT'S what I meant by them being ignored.
its all bullshit...an institution such as MOCA would never organise, spend money on materials and fly over an artist to do a mural without OKing a concept or sketch...utter bullshit! either dietch didnt like, it was about the american war heroes or hype controversy...but they knew exactly what was going on..

Just your run of the mill preemptive stupidity.

I don't think its drawn THAT badly, why you look close up its nice and detailed, it it was perfect and all in perspective it would have looked whack.
ReplyDeleteWHO CARES GO LINE UP AT M&S NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The more I look at it the more I realize that the MOCA did him a favor. The piece is shoddy, especially compared to the Rennes piece.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to imagine that Deitch had the piece buffed because it wasn't good. No controversy, he just didn't like it. Try again, no hard feelings Blu?
