I've been trying to shoe Andy out of my pantry for days and rupert won't take no for an answer, but I digress, the world is a dark shitty shit place.
But this, although ever so ever so worthy, tries to poke a little at the dark underbelly of manipulation.

I doubt these are even glued down. Looks like it's
ReplyDeletemore of the type of 'street art' that only exists as a cheap internet
photo-op.
Vanda£og, Lord of all that's fake and gimmicky will
wank hard over this.
Yep, yet another picture that's been deliberately set-up for the internet, making sure to get a nice background in shot to give it context, otherwise nobody would even know what it's meant to be about. Time to call bullshit on this fake street art genre.
ReplyDeletebefore the days of internet street art consumption things were put in the street so people would see them. If you wanted lots of people to see something, the street was the best place.
ReplyDeletenow they only need to be put in the street so they can be filmed or photographed.
so a lot of what gets called street art isn't really. kind of, but kind of not.
it happens IN the street, but is then only seen on the internet or in a gallery.
so what should we call it? we need a new name for this kind of art. And since we're all art critics on this blog then it should be us that names it!
Any suggestions?
K-guy is a master of this kind of weak stunt where the street is just used as background scenery for a photographic arrangement of his 'street art' stage props.
ReplyDeleteCheck out one of his earlier works http://www.flickr.com/photos/nolionsinengland/3655880641/ each toilet seat had a picture of Gordon Brown in it. Hilarious.
And then there was a series of old mattresses he left in the street http://www.flickr.com/photos/nolionsinengland/3026455521/
He must think he's making cutting-edge social satire, but his stuff just makes me cringe with embarrassment for him. I agree about needing a name for this bullshit genre of imitation street art, but even most of the so-called street artists who do more permanent things in the street often only do so in one notorious turd-infested dark narrow alley where the public never venture, and then they relentlessly spam all of the flickr street art groups with pics of their latest 'street work', often using multiple identities so it looks like they've got a following. There is so much blatant fakery in street art, and the most insulting part about it is that they must think we're all too stupid to see through the charade. There are even a whole slew of 'street artists' who have never even done any illegal street art in their lives. Their whole output is either on canvas or at organised urban art painting festivals.
In Italy there is a grass roots fan campaign for a to return to 'real football' as opposed to the hyped money-driven product it's become today. I think we need the same kind of thing for street art.
Product placement covers it completely but you might want to add a street or urban prefix to it.
