A Couple More New Banksys -UPDATE

It's hard not to look at these and think Oscars and film promotion.

I just want to think he's in the USA and having a laugh at their expense, these pieces have a little spite to them which is always good. But I can't - the promotion is always hanging around like elephant in the room.

Banksy will always be good at the analogy, pissing up against the wall/market crash works, the system is piss and we're governed by it.

And this, I love, a return to some older style work a smiling poke in the side of the 'US Dream'.

Okay so i hate the connection to the Oscars but if you can use your time there to piss off a few of the inhabitants all the better.

'A rep for The Light Group -- a management company based in Las Vegas -- tells us CBS' outdoor advertising department is responsible for peeling off the billboard ... and they tore it down without ever contacting Light Group management.
The Light Group rep tells us, "We're extremely pissed ... It's our billboard that got tagged .. it's not their billboard ... CBS clearly has ZERO appreciation for art!!!"
The rep added some parting praise for the Academy Award nominated artist, "We were flattered Banksy tagged on our ad -- it was epic."

The Light Group was told it will be allowed to keep the work of art -- so far, no word on what it plans to do with it. '

  1. I'd bet that the billboard one was done by other artists paid by Banksy like those ones done for the NY pet shop show and the billboard was hired for the purpose.

The painting style looks like L.A graffiti writers work.

And that dog one is weak as piss. DickFace did almost the same thing there last year.

  2. Whoever did it, it's a style I like. Got a link to the Dickface piece?

  3. I normally can't stand Banksy, but that dog one is actually ok. I'll probably dislike it in 5 mins though when the novelty has worn off.

I read it as 'Graffiti as territorial pissing' in relation to the fire extinguisher tags that are popular nowadays. Banksy loves having sly digs at the graffiti community, no wonder they all hate him.

The other pieces are really scraping the barrel. Mickey Mouse and kids with guns...could it possibly get any more cliched?

  4. FuckFace's:

It's pretty shitty but covers the same territorial pissing ground.

  5. The Mickey bears some resemblance to what local writer Rime MSK has been doing with Mickey Mouse and he's well known for the billboard takeovers in L.A.

Also Aroe MSK has for a long time done something similar with the character:

Both were involved with doing t-shirts and hat designs for Disney recently.

  6. Blew Kaws out of the water with the 'Disney' one.
I think Kaws better stick to his 'Boytoys' for vandalgaya lovers.

  7. The billboard is banksy's work. He didn't install it though. It was purchased from the billboard company, painted in studio and installed by the billboard company. There's a reason this piece has not been removed... Futhermore, there is no way that he could reach high enough to paint the heads of Mickey and Minnie in situ. Nice try Banksy, not a real hijack.

  8. So how come it's just been ripped down?

  9. to make it look all illegal and daring when it's nothing of the sort?

Anyhow it's doing it's job it was intended to do as it's got everyone blogging and speculating about it so it's money well spent in his case.

Remember those DickFace pound notes popping up on electronic billboards for a few days he was meant to have hacked? Same thing. Pay a couple of 100 quid for a few days rental.

  10. The deformed foetus Vandalog on twitter... "When will Banksy have his "fuck you all" moment? I'm still hoping that 1 day he'll move to a commune with the guys from Crass or something"

Oh dear. The poor deluded child must be pitied for his naivety.

  11. Tacky stunts in order to win an oscar (rather than leave it to the film's "merits") he obviously so desperately wants as he craves any validation from the establishment he pretends to decry.

It's like if the cast of The King's Speech were doing naked tapdances outside all the judge's houses.

  12. but you got to love the immigrant trying to steal the poster to flog on ebay, and then getting man-handled by the guy who owns the billboard

no doubt Banksy cut a deal with him - you give me an ad to paint over and a spot to hang it in, and you get to keep it afterwards

he business of getting up shouldn't involve business

Banksy only drops work in the street now when he has things to promote. He's become a part of the system he always claimed to be against. What a shame

  13. ha ha.. like he's going to be writing trackside surrounded by dog shit and crack heads posting throw ups on his flickr and moaning about the buff.

He's one of the most famous artists in the world and up for an Oscar, an anonymous writer, from Bristol..it's fucking stupidly fantastic !

  14. And yet you fail or refuse to smell the hypocrisy. I'd rather hangout any day or night under a flyover with a bunch of writers and crackheads as I'll take the honest smell of paint fumes over insincere smoozing and PR bullshit at some poncey gallery or event.

Keep bleating and one day they may even invite you into the flock but only if your fleece is golden.

  15. that video was a bit grim as it was like a flock of vultures squabbling over a carcass.

  16. people seem to think banksy has all of a sudden sold out. But he was a sell out from day one remember the little stocking filler books from waterstones or the Blur album cover. also i thought the pissing dog looked like a tortoise.
