Final Thoughts on the Banksy HMV Debacle

So Banksy created original pieces for a HMV display to sell his DVD. I just had to say it again, it sounds so fucking ridiculous.

Let's not forget this was the artist who defaced 500 (?) copies of Paris Hilton's CD and placed them in HMVs to make a point about the vacuous nature of consumption and celebrity our wonderful world embraces and loves. This was the man who stated it was time to reclaim the streets from the advertisments forced upon us.

And now, here is stamping on all of that, as if it meant nothing?

What do we know? Well we know he is not anti-consumption he's been selling everything and commissioning etc for years and years. Fine.

But there is a new book around the corner.

Perhaps just perhaps this final act is the coup de grace to the personna of Banksy?

  1. Downloaded the film on a torrent yesterday, and it's fucking shit! Glad I didn't pay for it.

Banksy's whole career has been about exploiting the counterculture for personal gain. He trawls historical protest art websites looking for images to rip off. Just the other day I saw a version of Millet's 'The Gleaners' (the one that he modified with the woman ripped out of the picture and having a fag) except this one was made in the 1970's...same painting, same concept except the ripped out woman was giving a black power salute. I could go on and on with other examples. Most people don't know the history of the artform, so they are oblivious to how he operates, leaving him free to rake in the cash in the most hypocritical, cuntish way possible.

Just glad that the scales are starting to fall from some people's eyes at last.
