Faile - Venting!

right i'll get this out and then leave it alone

Faile

I'd go with the maxim that prices by artists should generally for prints (especially) be set slightly below the market, that way you generate interest and good publicity. ie. Chee those Faile guys they're great they're thinking about their fan base and keeping it as affordable as they can. Interestingly they always did this prior to hitting it rich. Then something seemed to happen, being purely cynical I'd say - let's fleece them for everything they've got - attitude tookover, but hey what the fuck do I know?

Secondly, how many pieces from a show they did 2 - YES 2 years ago do they have to release? The release yesterday marked the last one, and all I can say is thank fucking god! Again this feels like dragging a great idea out until it becomes a boring, wince inducing piece of work.

But hey lets remember these guys are fighting the gallery system (?) apart from the fact they're represented by galleries and release work via them, as well as, via they're own website. All this tells me is,they're making money from all avenues they can, hardly maverick behaviour to me.

But hey what do I know, no one talks to me

  1. postscript: as I'm sure some 'wit' will point out, people keep buying so why shouldn't they sell at this price? And you know what, it's a valid point.

I don't have to agree with or like the way Faile have gone about their business though.

  2. Whoever said they were mavericks though? Urban art in general doesn't display any anti-capitalist credentials as far as I can see. Except maybe a bit of empty sloganeering and the odd image stolen from some historic protest art, but surely everyone realises by now that's just thrown in there as a marketing ploy? It's the artistic equivalent of all of the braindead hipsters down brick lane wearing vintage punk t-shirts just as a trendy pose.

  3. I think the comment was based on Vandalog's praise today ' I think it shows some balls from Faile that they are trying to break out of the gallery system'

  4. Ahh ok, I see now. You need to give a bit of context sometimes Dr Funky, for those of us who aren't psychic. I do read Vandalog sometimes, but even when doing so I skip straight past the posts that are pushing yet more boring urban art merchandise.
