PHLEGM IN SHEFFIELD

got a bit of a Know Hope feel to it, but never the less looks pretty fresh and hopefully one to watch

Blu in Berlin Again

Another simple message converyed absolutely brillantly - this boy stepped up and passed Banksy in my estimation - for message unconnected to personal gain (although of course it does lead to that)

Ben Eine, David Cameron and Obama

So by now everyone who has any interest will know that Barack Obama got an Eine from David Cameron

http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2010/jul/21/ben-eine-artist-cameron-obama

Although Ben (Eine) exclaims surprise it's fairly obvious there was discussion prior and you can hear Nelly Duff licking their lips as they salivate with the prospect of actually shifting some of Eine's work.

The wonders of street art and the depths it will go to for some money and recognition, all involved have really thought this through. Ben any comments on, the VAT increase which is effectively a regressive tax?  Any thoughts on public sector cuts of 25%? Any?

No I thought not, fuck off and take your lame lettering with you.

Banksy's Work at Viva la Revolucion

This strikes me as an utterly pointless inclusion if this is the work you're going to show, alongside original and pieces specificially made.

Faile - Temple Project - Portugal Art 2010 16/7 - 15/8

So unless you were blinded by the spectacle of the World Cup you will in the last few days have seen pic's of the ambitious Temple Project by Faile, in Lisbon for PortugalArte10. There's been a huge amount of praise for this work and yes the idea is great and the tiling a perfect fit for the 'look' that's being shot at.

I do have my reservations though the actual Faile pieces in the ruins look well 'plasticy' maybe this is the pic's but they look moulded and stuck on, most odd. I'm sure this isn't the look they were going for unless they were really shooting at a 70's terraced house dodgy ornate frontage (work that out if you can!).

Anyway decide for yourself

The Banksy Machine - Further Comments

The original piece was catharsis for me. To fill the vacuum left when something I respected wasn't all I expected it to be.

But Dr Funky are you naive? The world turns people need to live. I agree, I applaud artists with a business acumen, Damien Hirst built a name and an empire around a factory workshop ethic. But when you set yourself up as more, as different and then through the cracks you see what is really going on, (and being hidden) then you've a reason for disappointment.

So the question is what are we left with? If the meaning has been 'tainted', we're left with an appreciation of some fine images and a man and a team who've played/crafted the part of the 'outsider' very well, whilst carefully strenghtening a brand and a business.

Why call your blog 'Street Art is Dead'? This is why.

The Banksy Machine - where it came from and where it's going

Nice BanksyImage by edwardfilms via Flickr
Banksy the graffiti artist who found acceptance in the mainstream, a heap of cash and a larger and larger distance between himself and his fans, but did that ever matter?

A Bristol boy with a talent to draw, average in most respects but an eye for an image and a great way to display it. From the 90's Banksy always could produce memorable pieces, something those around him struggled to do. Yes they saw graf from across the water and produced Anglophied (!) versions, yes they looked good but did they leave a lasting impression? Those closest to it will say 'yes', but those who would see it in a picture or just in passing, with no knowledge it would be a 'no'. But Banksy always stood out.

And so he progressed to stencils, the myths say whilst under a train or whatever, but stencils were there before him and will be around long after him. What he did so well was distill what makes them so useful, speed and clarity, combined with his eye for a message and an image. The message, for some this was very important, the people's champion, the voice of the man on the street (who had a heart). He cared about the down trodden, the forgotten, the misunderstood and yet everyone could smile and not be angered. Brillant, a quiet riot for the disaffected classes.

And while tha voice grew louder, so a business was born around him. Those who followed him were puzzled, Banksy is selling what he gives to us? Well he needs to make a living and what he did was give them to those very people who he spoke to. Lots of images at prices that were reasonable. Whilst slowly on the side, the production of originals began, at first for those he spoke for, but quickly for those he didn't, who saw an opportunity and the business grew.

The business grew, the money rolled in, the links strengthened with those with the most money, whilst those lower down were swept away, their time and influence seemingly forgotten. The cheaper prints now, a tool for the odd charity, or movie production, but no longer disbursing the images, controlling their number ensuring the demand far outstripped supply, keeping his public waiting and wondering.

Images now appearing on the streets for specific purposes, the US conscious you say? Was it to question their values? Or to simply say 'Banksy?'. Or was one simply the by product of the other? And whilst the images became a means to an end, the question is, how long has this been the case?

And the forefront, an over riding image of an artful dodger, just getting by, and yet everything was for sale at the Museum, originals were for sale from the American tour, pdf's were sent to those with the largest wallets. So what are we to believe? That it's not about the money? No, at least partly there is now a business to support, an image to uphold, but it's not the person we first thought it was, those times have sadly passed and with it alot of the ideals we thought were so important.

The question more importantly is do we still care? Is there anybody to continue what was started?

Or, are we left with pale imitators who have seen a business model?

Is that Banksy's true legacy? As he slowly walks into the distance, hand in hand with the people he said this was never about?

New Artists | New Prints | SHOP at Lazarides

I saw this on my little phone this morning and rather sadly got all excited, perhaps one of these will be the new Banksy? Okay too optimistic, perhaps one of these will be the new Dolk? (Okay he's shit now, but for a time he was exciting). Well when I finally got to a piece of technology that let me see the pieces I was well back to my dead inside state. Two average, meaningless pieces, Mary with a space baby? I mean WTF? 10/10 for ideas produced when under heavy medication but funny? Decent? Anything? Pass. Oh the photo one is quite nice I guess, but why do I feel like if I could be arsed to do a google search I'd find these piece's elsewhere from 2007?

New RYCA print Bubblegirl at Scrawl Collective

Sometimes the voices in my head say, "Damn Funky you are one sexy hunk of a man" , sometimes they say  "calm your juices of righteousness, the world is not ready for them harsh brews" and sometimes they whisper "fuck there's some really shit prints out there".

So Ryca has a new print out and I can safely say it's a take on a Hutch print, yes 'Hutch', meant for boys who've not discovered the Internet, lame titillation for porno beginners, as lame as a lame old donkey on Brighton beach having a dump next to a Hutch piece - get the picture?

The World of Banksy Forums - Inhabitants - Pt.7

7. Deseparate for Discussion Dictators - say something obtuse I dare you. What you don't want to? But it will fire people up, it will anger some, prod the teachers to teach, the little one's to cry in despair, the old one's to misinterpret and the rest of us to say 'well you got another 10 views out of that idiotic comment'.

So next time you read

'I wonder why Banksy hasn't done a deal with Toys R Us yet? '

or

'Damien Hirst he's not really been successful has he?'

Take a deep breath, think and realise it's pointless. Oh and no those statements are mine now ' thankyou very much' for future prodding only.

New Prints at Pictures on Walls

Anyway here they are:
